Organization Tips
The Laundry Room:

Laundry no longer needs to be an all-day event. For years, you've set Sunday morning aside to go from room to room gathering up everyone's dirty laundry, taking it to the laundry room, then sorting the laundry into piles on the floor. This can be your New Routine!

You now have a hamper in each bedroom, and in each bathroom. Your laundry room now has a Triple Laundry Sorter, ready to be filled up with your whites, lights, and darks.

You're going right by your son's bedroom, so why not take his laundry down to the laundry room and sort it? You notice that the laundry basket in the upstairs bathroom is full. Take it down to the laundry room and sort it.

Wow! You have a full bag of "Dirty Whites", and it's only Tuesday. Go ahead, turn the machine on and stay ahead of the game. You're in control now!

Hanger etiquette

You're at the golf club, and that snobbish woman seems to be staring at your husband's golf shirt. Oh no! His shoulders are sporting the dreaded "nipples", The little peaks that appear when you hang his shirts on those old hangers to dry. Invest in an accordion wall dryer, so that his golf shirts can lay flat to dry, or if wall space is an issue, at least invest in some quality hangers with rounded edges. It's a simple solution to one of life's embarrassing problems.

Folding Laundry

"If only I had a place to fold clothes" and "If only the folded piles of clothing could somehow make their way back into everyone's drawers" are two of my clients' biggest laundry dilemmas!

We've solved the problem! We create a folding area by using three 18" X 36" adjustable Metro shelves, add a solid melamine surface for folding on the top shelf, adding three crates to each of the other two shelves. Designate a crate for each member of the family, and one for the linen closet. When an item is folded, it goes into the proper crate. When your daughter is looking for her favorite blouse, she knows it will be in "Her" crate. This will eliminate the "Ironing Pile", and the frustration of having your neatly folded piles messed up by a member of the family looking for "their shirt". It's easy, and it works!

Kitchen Drawers

How to organize that kitchen drawer once and for all!

  1. Get a box and put it on the counter!
  2. Take everything out of the drawer and set all of it on top of the counter!
  3. Wipe out the bottom of the drawer (no one knows where the crumbs come from).
  4. Insert your newly purchased adjustable drawer system.
  5. Systematically put your utensils or cutlery back into the divided drawer. This is where the discipline begins! Don't put the Daffy Duck spoon back with your best cutlery. It goes in the box! Don't put three corkscrews back with your utensils. Only your favorite one is allowed in the drawer. The other two go in the box! Please don't put the four pieces that remain from the very first set of cutlery you ever bought. They don't match the set you use every day! Put them in the box! Unless you own a restaurant, there's no need for five potato peelers. Only one is allowed in the drawer, the others go in the box!

You might be wondering where the box is going! Out of sight, but within easy enough reach if you decide to have a huge party and might need extra peelers and corkscrews.

The idea is to NOT CLUTTER YOUR EVERYDAY LIVING with things that you don't use on a daily basis!

If you're at all anal-retentive, it goes without saying that you will keep the white utensils in one compartment, the black ones in another, and the stainless ones in yet another. There's nothing quite as satisfying as opening a perfectly organized drawer!

The 3 Box System

If you don't move every five years, pretend that you are! Sort through clothes, sort through your stuff! Use the three box system! One box is for everything that you will never part with, one box is for items that you wondered why you ever purchased and kept in the first place, and one box is for those items that you just can't decide whether you should keep , throw out, or give to your best friend. Anyway you look at it, you'll be down to two boxes in no time!

Hangers in the front hall

First impressions are important. When a guest arrives in your home, or when a client enters your office, what is the first thing that you do? Right, you offer to take their coat and hang it up! Why not put your best foot forward, and have at least twelve good-looking matching hangers in your front closet? You will be amazed at the difference that a small thing like this will make to the appearance of your coat closet.
